Review: Virgin Mobile's Super Slice Cell Phone
At just $49.99, Virgin Mobile's Super Slice serves up a lot of features for your buck. The most notable attraction of this model, also known as UTStarcom PCS1450, is the built in Bluetooth technology. It's a thin, candy-bar cell phone which measures about 4.4 inches in length, 1.9 inches in width, and a mere .04 thick. Granted, there are thinner phones on the market, but seriously, how thin does a phone need to be? If slides nicely into a pocket, and at under 3 ounces, you hardly even know it's there. This phone is essentially an updated version of VM's Slice model. The differences are the addition of the already mentioned Bluetooth feature, a camera, and a slightly larger screen. Screen quality is the same as the slice, unfortunately. It's average, but for a phone at this price point, you can't complain too much. The camera is a VGA type, which produces quite low resolution (640x480) pictures. The quality is poor, to say the least, compared to phones that offer images measured in mexapixel. But it's still a nice addition for such a basic unit. I'd rate the call quality at slightly above average. There was little background noise, and parties on both ends can make each other out quite clearly. Voices are somewhat muted, however, but not annoyingly so. The PCS1450 also features a speaker phone, which I found not particularly adequate. If the phone is on the car seat next to you, you'll need to dramatically increase the decibel level of your voice to make your words understandable to the caller. All-in-all, though, I'd give call quality a good rating for an entry level candy bar phone. Other features of note: Test messaging (of course), web browsing & IM capabilities, pix messaging, and email. The display is not the most brilliant you'll find on the market. But once again, this is a $50 dollar phone, folks. There are a few demo games on the phone: EA Arcade, Gameloft, and Pac-Man. You have to purchase the complete versions through VM for about 6 bucks, though. One serious gripe I have with this unit is in the ringtone department. All the pre-loaded tones are nauseating, in my opinion. I suppose this might well be deliberate, to necessitate the need to purchase additional tones from the VM website. Crafty devils! Virgin Mobile is a decidedly youth oriented company that tailors it's products to the younger set. The names they give their phones are downright idiotic. Super Slice? Ick! Of course, pre-paid companies are appealing to those who may not have achieved a good credit rating thus far in their lives; or those who just can't afford a long term contract and the monthly charges. It's also a good choice for anybody who has minimal need for a cell phone, and just needs a basic unit for emergency calls an such. Taking all that into consideration, and the $50 price tag for the Super Slice, it's pretty hard to find fault with this phone. It certainly exceeded my expectations. |
